Running out of money in retirement is the number one financial fear for Americans over 50, and it is not irrational. With life expectancies increasing, many retirees will spend 25 to 30 years in retirement, often outliving their savings by years or even decades. Traditional investment portfolios, no matter how well managed, carry market risk that can be devastating if a major downturn hits early in retirement.
Annuities offer a solution that many people overlook, misunderstand, or dismiss based on outdated information: a guaranteed income stream you cannot outlive, regardless of how markets perform or how long you live.
What Is an Annuity?
An annuity is a contract between you and an insurance company. You deposit a lump sum or series of payments, and in return the insurer guarantees you an income stream—either immediately or starting at a future date you specify. The income can be structured to last for a fixed period, for your lifetime, or for the joint lives of you and a spouse.
Think of it as creating your own personal pension. Most private-sector workers no longer have access to traditional defined-benefit pensions. An annuity is a way to replicate that guaranteed income structure using your own accumulated assets.
Types of Annuities
- Fixed annuities: earn a guaranteed interest rate with no market exposure, predictable, safe, and ideal for conservative savers
- Variable annuities: invested in sub-accounts similar to mutual funds, with higher growth potential but also market risk and typically higher fees
- Fixed indexed annuities: earn interest linked to a market index like the S&P 500 with a 0% floor protecting against losses, combining growth potential with principal protection
- Immediate annuities: you deposit a lump sum and income begins within 30 days, ideal for someone already in or near retirement needing income now
- Deferred annuities: accumulate value over time and begin paying income at a future date you select, well suited for longer-term planning
"A fixed indexed annuity can give you the best of both worlds: growth potential tied to the market with a guaranteed floor so you never lose principal. In a year when the S&P 500 drops 30%, your account value stays the same. In a good year, you participate in a portion of the gains."
The Income Rider
Many modern annuities include optional income riders that guarantee a specific income benefit base, often growing at a fixed rate of 5 to 7% per year regardless of actual account performance. When you are ready to turn on income, the guaranteed benefit base determines your payout, not the actual account value. This means that even if the market has underperformed, your income is protected.
Income riders are particularly valuable for people who are 10–20 years from retirement and want to lock in guaranteed future income while their account continues to grow. The certainty this provides allows you to take more risk in other parts of your portfolio—knowing your baseline retirement income is already secured.
Who Should Consider an Annuity?
Annuities are particularly valuable for people who want guaranteed income in retirement that they cannot outlive, who are concerned about sequence-of-returns risk (a major market drop early in retirement wiping out years of savings), who want to protect a portion of retirement savings from market volatility, or who are looking for tax-deferred growth outside of traditional retirement accounts that have been maxed out.
What to Watch Out For
Not all annuities are created equal, and some come with significant drawbacks. Surrender charges are penalties for withdrawing more than a certain amount in the early years of the contract and can range from 5 to 15% and last for 7 to 10 years. Fee structures on variable annuities can be complex and expensive. Read every contract carefully and work with an advisor who is transparent about compensation.
Used correctly within a comprehensive retirement plan, the right annuity provides something no other financial product can: the certainty of income you cannot outlive. That certainty has enormous psychological and practical value in retirement.
